Open Letter to the President

March 12, 2011
Benigno Aquino, President of the Philippines

Mr. President,

As you know, Colonel Gaddafi of Libya is attacking the freedom-loving people of Libya. The situation is somewhat similar to our own EDSA revolution, but far far worse. As a taxpayer in the Philippines, I would like to see the Philippines Air Force (PAF) deployed to Libya to help the Libyan rebels succeed in their revolution. I consider that to be good use of Philippine resources, and a form of foreign aid that will actually make a difference.

I know that you have sent assistance to extract our citizens from Libya. But now I want you to help Libyans, not just Filipinos. Prove to the world that the Filipinos care about races other than our own. It is about time we exported foreign aid rather than just receiving it, anyway.

Even though the PAF is far less powerful than other countries in the world, and probably can’t do it by ourselves, my hope is that if we go to this effort with all our might – even if that means the complete destruction of the PAF – it will embarrass other countries enough that they will step up to the plate themselves, and thus we will be successful. The rebels have been losing ground recently (ie even today) and they should not have to face Gaddafi’s forces alone like that.

We know from past experience that no group of people speaks with one voice. There will be x% of Libyans who support the arrival of Philippine troops, and there will be y% who oppose them. Note that Gaddafi himself will be in the y%. It won't be a completely thankless task, because those x% there will thank you for it.

I am requesting that you take immediate action. By "immediate", I mean "how long it takes to fly our planes from the Philippines to Libya", not "how long it takes for the UN to debate the best way to do nothing while pretending to care as the good Libyan people are slaughtered".

If post-Gaddafi we find out that the figure for "x" wasn't as high as we had hoped it to be, that's fine, just apologize to the y% of people of Libya and promise to never topple Gaddafi again. So long as the task is completed, it doesn’t matter if we have to apologize even though we didn’t do anything wrong.

Please act Sir.
